While I’d love to skip a few steps and just say that I’m your perfect photographer, I’d rather you find the best photographer possible for your unique needs. So here are some tips on how to choose the boudoir photographer that's right for you while you browse your options...
Do you like their portfolio?
This is a no brainer! Every photographer has their own unique style. Check out the photographer's portfolio to see if their style aligns with your vision. You want your photographer to have a portfolio that makes you swoon.
Do they have client’s that look like you?
If you’re like me, you’re over that one-size-fits-all kinda beauty standard – and your photographer should be too! Unfortunately, many photographers don’t know how to photograph clients who are plus sized, dark skinned, male, or who have natural hair textures. So as you browse their photos, try to find examples of photos of client’s that share elements of your unique beauty. If they’re only shooting one type of client – white, size zero, long straight hair – they may not have the eye, technical skills, or experience necessary to highlight your beauty the way you deserve.
Do their previous clients love them?
Who doesn't love a little gossip, right? Check out what other clients are saying about the boudoir photographer you're interested in. Look for reviews and testimonials on their website or on popular review platforms. Pay attention to what clients loved about their experience, their interactions with the photographer, and the quality of the final images. It's a great way to get a sense of their professionalism, customer service, and overall satisfaction level.
Do y’all vibe?
Like, could you see yourself as friends? It sounds kinda petty, but how you feel on set is how you’re going to look in your photos. So if you’re feeling comfortable, playful, and excited around them, guess what? You’re going to LOOK comfortable, playful, and excited in your images. But to the contrary, if you feel uneasy, or have your guards up that’s going to show too.
Do they prioritize YOU?
These are intimate photos, so of course you want to make sure that you and your photos will be treated with the utmost respect. Ask if their photos automatically go into their portfolio; even if you’re comfortable with sharing your photos, it says something if they don’t give you the option to keep your photos private. Ask about how they manage and communicate consent and safety on set. Have they never thought about that? Because if so: yikes.
Is it worth the money?
If you hire a good boudoir photographer, that investment is going to be worth every penny. While it’s important to think about pricing and packages with your boudoir photographer, there’s more than just the dollar sign to consider. Figure out what all their booking fee includes. Hair and makeup is a green flag that the photographer cares about the final outcome of the images. Ask also about when you’ll be making final purchasing decisions. Ideally, you won’t have to commit to any large packages until you’ve seen all of the beautiful images you have to choose from.
Trust Your Gut Feeling
Trust your instincts. Sometimes you don’t need a reason to pick one photographer over another other than it just feels right. If you’re drawn to a certain photographer, that’s a great sign! And if they’re giving you weird vibes? Listen to that feeling too.
